I’m looking for the spiciest chicken in South Africa . Today, your comments have sent me to Al Hamra in Mayfair Johannesburg on the corner of 4th and the iconic church street. Having previously visited another Al Hamra branch is Fordsburg, which you can watch on my page. You guys told me that for even hotter chicken, I had to come here. Braaied outside on the pavement on hot open flames, the smell of the chicken wafts beautifully in the area with the red-hot sauce being applied liberally by Abdul Aziz.

Being served together with salad and roti, it was time to see if this really was as hot as everyone says. My initial thoughts were that there was some power in the sauce, which was made from a combination of chili oil and lemon, but it wasn’t initially overpowering. To me, as much as I love hot food, there’s no point if all it does is burn off your taste buds, and I’m glad to say that wasn’t the case with this chicken at all. It was delicious. Tender, well braaied, which the combination of chili and lemon provide a spicy, zesty mix. With time, however, the heat caught up with me, and I found myself drenched in sweat by the end of the experience.
